Search Engine and Directory Lists Last Updated: 21 November 2005
This is not an exhaustive list of Search Engines - of which there are thousands - but it's a useful snapshot of what's out there and frequently used. A handful of sites
provide comprehensive lists of search engines and directories, but Search Engine Colossus
is probably the best in this regard, with search functions and links to Search Engines in 259 countries and territories around the world. Other sites present Search Engine lists
for specific regions; if you're searching for engines in a particular region, try typing the region name + search engine, as in: "Middle East search engine".
There are books and several sites listed at right that provide informative tutorials on Search Engine operations, site optimization, and submission
procedures.
Major engines now charge a fee to index commercial sites or to ensure placement in query results, and there is much debate about whether this
will have negative impact on "real results". For an inciteful article on that subject, see The straight story on search engines, by Laurianne McLaughlin, or read it in the July 2002
issue of PC World (pp.115-124) - the specialized search list at right is partially culled from McLaughlin's article.
